An absorption spectrum usually has peaks at certain wavelengths that allow it to identify specific compounds. Transmittance is the amount of light that passed through the sample that reached the spectrophotometer. Absorption is the amount of light absorbed by any of the chemicals in the solute. Many modern spectrophotometers have a transmission and absorption output, but once you have captured the intensity, you can calculate these values. Known as white space, the control solution has only the chemical solvent in which the solute to be analyzed is dissolved. For example, if you had dissolved salt in water, your empty space would be just water.
